Conservative on Target! 10/17/12

[Bobby] Jindal said “structural changes” are needed in Washington, not just a matter of electing good people.
“Obviously I’ve got candidates I support, and I hope they get elected. But, look, let’s be honest, when Republicans were in charge, they — their spending was bad. Under President Bush, the deficits were bad. They’ve gotten worse under President Obama. I think we need structural changes. At the state level, we’re required to balance our budget. At the state level, super majority before you can raise taxes,” he said.
“At the state level, you can’t grow government spending faster than the economy and population without a super majority. At the state level, at least in Louisiana, you’ve got constitutional restrictions on bonding out future revenues, and playing games. I think just electing — I think every few years we get the guys that say, ‘Hey, vote for me and everything will be better.’ They go, they become part of the problem, so I think we need structural changes.”

The problem with the understandable political pandering by both candidates, but especially the populist-conservative approach of Mitt Romney, is that it locks him in politically to positions which are not pro-liberty or pro-growth. They may be good sound bites, and they may help win an election – and in that sense it is hard to object too much because the current administration is so worthy of being turned out – but they are not good policy, either in terms of actual impact or adherence to principle.

3 Reasons Not to Carry A Gun:

  1. You’re a fatalist
  2. You trust the government
  3. You don’t trust yourself

Caviar schemes -- Senator Tom Coburn has once again documented some of America's most useful governmental expenditures, reports TheDC's Caroline May:
"The United States Department of Agriculture spent $300,000 to promote caviar this year, Oklahoma Republican Sen. Tom Coburn detailed Tuesday with the release of his 'Wastebook 2012.' 'Perhaps nothing demonstrates just how out of touch Washington is more than the $300,000 USDA is spending to tell Americans to eat caviar, one of the world’s most expensive delicacies, at a time when millions of Americans are struggling just to put the basics on the family dinner table,' Coburn writes in the introduction of the Wastebook, which outlines 100 examples of government waste, totaling more than $18 million. 'It echoes back to the fabled proclamations of the callous royal who, when asked about the hungry and poor shortly before the French Revolution, replied ‘let them eat cake.’"
Actually, rereading that one gets the sense that Coburn may not think the U.S. government should be spending money on caviar, even if it is just promoting it. How quaint.

"Republicans don't know how to defend morally an individual's right to achieve wealth and to keep it, and that is why they fail. ... It's part and parcel with their ambivalence over the individualist heritage of the nation. ... One of the things that people have to understand is that the American Revolution was truly an epic revolution in the way individuals were perceived in relation to the rest of the society.  Throughout history individuals had always been cogs in some machine; they'd always been something to be sacrificed for the king, the tribe, the gang, the chieftain, the society around them, the race, whatever, and the real revolution, in America especially, was a moral revolution.  It was a moral revolution in that ... suddenly, with the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution, the individual, his life, his well-being, his property, his happiness became central to our values, and that is what really made America unique.  People came here from all over the world to try to escape the kind of oppression they had and experienced in the past. They came here for freedom; they came here for self-expression and self-realization, and America offered them that kind of a place." -- Robert Bidinotto
