A “Crisis,” More Hype, and Another Call for Bailouts although student/teacher ratio would only rise 1.3!
Brace yourselves – America is about to fall into an “education catastrophe,” says Secretary of Education, Arne Duncan. Up to 300,000 educational workers may receive pink slips this coming fall. The only solution is the same solution to all our other economic problems. Yes, you know the drill. It is time for another bailout, this time to save our education system.
The argument remains that educational job losses will result in larger classrooms and thus lower academic achievement. However, if 300,000 job losses really occur, the student to teacher ratio would rise by a slim margin from 15.3 – 1 to 16.6 – 1. At 100,000 job losses, the ratio would rise to 15.6 – 1. To put this number is perspective; the student-teacher ratio in 1950 was 27:1. In addition, public schools at the time employed 2.36 teachers for every non-teacher. Today that ratio is closer to one to one. More importantly, throwing money at states merely puts a band aid on the problems facing our education system and prevents districts from pursuing actual reform and more efficiency.  If the administration insists on using its usual spending fix, it can start by using some of the $421 billion in unspent stimulus funds from last year’s Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The Trouble With Teacher Tenure - We can't make progress if bad teachers have jobs for life:  The good news is that the majority of teachers are not interested in protecting colleagues who don't belong in the classroom. Last summer the American Federation of Teachers surveyed its members, asking: "Which of these should be the higher priority: working for professional teaching standards and good teaching, or defending the job rights of teachers who face disciplinary action?" According to Randi Weingarten, the union's president, "by a ratio of 4 to 1 (69% to 16%), AFT members chose working for professional standards and good teaching as the higher priority." She elaborated: "Teachers have zero tolerance for people who . . . demonstrate they are unfit for our profession."Read more…

The Gulf Spill Record - Does the media lie, distort or avoid the truth purposefully? Looks like..
[USA Today]reported that from the early 1970s through the 1990s, offshore rigs and pipelines averaged about four spills per year of at least 50 barrels. The annual average then "surged" to 17 over the past decade and 22 from 2005 through 2009, a "trend that could have served as a warning for the massive leak in the Gulf of Mexico."…
…the facts are that the last serious rig-related accident spill in U.S. waters took place in 1969 off Santa Barbara, and the industry's overall spill record has been good. As Washington looks to write new drilling regulations, it ought to look at the complete record first. [ Please read the whole post and answer my title question yourself. – JS ]

Obama's Latest Shakedown - Alinsky would be proud!

Just as Obama blamed Wall Street and exempted government (liberal policies) and quasi government entities (Freddie and Fannie) for their complicity in the financial meltdown and just as he blamed doctors, pharmaceuticals and insurance companies for soaring health care costs caused mostly by socialistic governmental policies, he is summarily blaming BP and exempting unreasonable liberal environmental policies for shutting down more conventional and safer drilling methods -- and venues. As usual, he and his ilk greatly contribute to problems and then use those problems as catalysts to justify even greater doses of their destructive socialistic prescriptions. It's maddening. INCREDIBLE! Club Fed for Illegal Aliens
The immigration lawyers' racket has lobbied for compassionate "alternatives" to detention that routinely result in deportation fugitives simply ditching the process and disappearing.
Their goal is not to improve detention. Their goal is to sabotage it -- all while law-breakers munch on croissants and joyfully shout "BINGO!" Read more…

Devoid of basic economic sense, Democrats kill free checking accounts! Congress now says banks cannot charge overdraft fees without first getting the consumer’s permission. Fat chance that will happen. So banks are going to start charging fees merely to have a checking account. This is not an unintended consequence. This was quite foreseeable except to Democrats.
