Conservative on Target! 12/20/12

The IMF calculates that to maintain present spending trend the United States will have to nearly double (88 percent increase) all federal taxes to maintain theoretical solvency. -- Kevin Williamson

I often don't often agree with her but this is one of Peggy Noonan's Best:

When Childhood Fears Come True

...We attempt to respond to tragedies politically. We try to take actions that will make our world safer, and this is understandable. But there is no security from existence itself. The only answer is to "plunge into" life. "We have to engage in life and take it on with all the risks it entails, or we won't be alive at all."   He added: "It is better to suffer pain than to live in a world in which you don't allow yourself to be close enough to anybody to have the experience that's bound to give you suffering." And "love guarantees suffering."   "We're all on a hero's journey," said Mr. Kennedy, from where we began to where we will end. The hero faces challenges along the way. We are like King Arthur's knights, entering the forest each day without a cut path, and "finding our way through is what we are called to do." Here, Mr. Kennedy suggested, faith offers not an explanation but the only reliable guide. "Jesus said, 'I am the way.' That is not a metaphor

Godlessness Fails, Again
But external, legal constraints will never be enough. Ever. Let us not kid ourselves; wishful thinking will not help us. The murderous intentions of any person even of mere average intelligence can certainly find a way around the most stringent gun regulations. In this recent Newtown horror, the shooter stole legal guns from his mother, in a state enforcing intensely strict gun regulations already. More constraints may be needed, perhaps even in terms of whether there are potential sociopaths in the same home, but regulations without internal human constraints remain powerless.

A Call for Full Disclosure in the Gun Control Debate
Now that we have another tragic school mass murder that involves guns, it is a time for politicians far and wide to advocate gun control, as if more rules against law-abiding people getting guns will keep guns out of the hands of criminals who want to commit mass murder.  It is almost an American tradition: gun violence begets calls for gun control.  What is missing in every gun-control discussion is a "full disclosure" of which politician has a concealed weapons permit, has any guns in his own home, or is protected by armed security guards.  Just like the CNBC disclosure regarding touting stocks and the personal holdings of the person touting the stock, we need a "full disclosure" rule regarding armed protection of the politicians who advocate gun control. [Most elitists (hypocrites) of either polticial party have any one or more of those protections, protection they would deny us.]
