The 2000-09 average of defense spending was 19.0%. Payments to individuals, largely “entitlements”, as a percentage of total federal spending in 2010 will be 63.9%. The political class’s chatter would have us think that we spend an overwhelming amount of money on defense. Think again. Basically, the US government spends 3.4 times as much on entitlements as it does on defending us.
