Quick Quips – 6/23/10

Why Isn't the Obama Administration Suing 'Sanctuary Cities'? The notion that immigration policy should be handled at the federal level is a legitimate one, but it is difficult for the Obama administration to oppose Arizona’s law on these grounds since it has not lifted a finger in opposition to state-level policies that favor illegal immigrants. A different agenda is at work here. Read more…

Oh, oh! 'Wal-Mart Moms' Turn on the Democrats - Their finances are perilous, and they don't like Obamacare.
The moms dislike the recently enacted health care bill.  Roughly twice as many said the legislation will make their health care worse (42 percent) than said it will make it better (22 percent).  By 52 percent to 38 percent, they disapprove of the bill.  They were not asked if they favor repeal….
But it was their deep pessimism (73 percent) about the future that was the most striking finding in the survey, conducted on the Internet in late May.  Half of Wal-Mart moms are concerned about falling into a lower economic class.  They are anxious about joblessness.
“The pessimism is extraordinary,” Newhouse said.  Their view that things won’t be better a year from now is deep-seated.  “It is not going to change between now and election day,” he said, which is the worst news of all for Democrats. Read more…

In a study of 44 large fiscal adjustments in 24 advanced economies since 1975, Broadbent and Daly discovered that reducing expenditures by 1 percentage point a year boosted average annual growth by 0.6 percentage point. Raising the ratio of taxes to GDP by the same margin cut growth by an average 0.9 percentage point.
The equity markets of the countries that sliced spending beat those of other advanced nations by 64 percent during a three-year period, and their bond yields fell by more than if budget adjustments had been driven by tax hikes, according to the report. Read more…

This Armageddon looms in 2011 > State Bankruptcies - Who will blink first?: Something will give in this national game of chicken. If it is the states and Obama that blink first, we will free our local governments of the grip of municipal unions, their rigid work rules and their unaffordable pensions. If the Republicans blink first, they will forfeit their right to represent the American people, having backed down from the challenge of our times. Read more…

Ken Salazar Gets a Kick in the You-Know-What
In a scathing ruling issued Tuesday afternoon, New Orleans-based Feldman overturned the administration's radical six-month moratorium on deepwater drilling -- and he singled out Salazar's central role in jury-rigging a federal panel's scientific report to bolster flagrantly politicized conclusions. In a sane world, Salazar's head would roll. In Obama's world, he gets immunity…

Guns Save Lives - The idea that gun control is crime control is just a myth... The National Academy of Sciences reviewed dozens of studies and could not find a single gun regulation that clearly led to reduced violent crime or murder. Read more…
