Quick Quips – 4/6/10

Gallup says the Tea Partiers are no different from the rest of the country!

A DUMB POLICY ON NUCLEAR WEAPONS: DOES IT MATTER? Sure does!
For the first time, the United States is explicitly committing not to use nuclear weapons against nonnuclear states that are in compliance with the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty, even if they attacked the United States with biological or chemical weapons or launched a crippling cyberattack.”
On its face, that is unbelievably stupid. A country attacks us with biological weapons, and we stay our hand because they are "in compliance with the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty"? That is too dumb even for Barack Obama. Must read more…

Tea Party 48% Obama 44%!
On major issues, 48% of voters say that the average Tea Party member is closer to their views than President Barack Obama. The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey found that 44% hold the opposite view and believe the president’s views are closer to their own.
Not surprisingly, Republicans overwhelmingly feel closer to the Tea Party and most Democrats say that their views are more like Obama’s. Among voters not affiliated with either major political party, 50% say they’re closer to the Tea Party while 38% side with the President.

stances under which he would risk extinguishing all life on earth from The DC Morning -- "For the first time, the United States is explicitly committing not to use nuclear weapons against non-nuclear states that are in compliance with the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, even if they attacked the United States with biological or chemical weapons or launched a crippling cyberattack," the New York Times reports. "White House officials said the new strategy would include the option of reconsidering the use of nuclear retaliation against a biological attack, if the development of such weapons reached a level that made the United States vulnerable to a devastating strike." The decision has stoked as much anger on the right, where conservatives reserve the privilege to nuke their own mothers, as on the left, where silver-spoon dweebniks continue to insist that they'd rather speak Russian, Chavezeze, or Mandarin than so much as keep a single nuclear weapon on American soil. Incidentally, the discomfort of the outliers puts those of us who don't dream in eschatology somewhat at ease.

The Constitutional Right and Social Obligation to Carry a Gun [This is one of the classic articles and should be read by all! – JS]

California Style Gun Control Coming To You - for starters, no semi-automatics!

Meet Your Lords and Masters: 7 Democrats Who Run Your World: Robert Byrd -  Barney Frank - Alan Grayson - Alcee Hastings - Maxine Waters - Charles Rangel - Pete Stark - I'd rather entrust the government of the United States to the first 254 people we could pull out of a minimum security prison rather than the Democrats who are currently in Congress. In all fairness to the Democrats we have in charge now, that change probably wouldn't make Congress any less corrupt (not much more corrupt either), but at least the criminals would be dumber, easier to catch, and less practiced at the slick con game that government in this country has become. On the other hand, God help any prison that had to hold the entire group of heavily connected sociopaths and swindlers that make up our Congress. Within a month of their arriving, the warden would be giving Nancy Pelosi daily backrubs, the guards would be replaced with SEIU thugs, and Barney Frank would be running a gay prostitution ring out of the prison back offices. Read the Transcript and Freak: a veritable clinic in narcissistic circumlocution!

Until I read the transcript of President Barack Obama's rambling, incoherent 2,600-word answer to a simple question from "Doris" at an appearance in Charlotte, N.C., about how we can afford Obamacare when we are already overtaxed, I dismissed as absurd the notion that he's a Manchurian candidate -- a plant. I still do, but after reading his response, I seriously almost have to question his competence.
I didn't watch the video, but the unscripted answer -- no disrespect intended -- sounds as if it was delivered by a drunk on an ideological mission. His answer was a veritable clinic in narcissistic circumlocution, a mishmash of barely related talking points about his health care plan -- not about taxes, as Doris had requested.

Race and Politics:
Few combinations are more poisonous than race and politics. That combination has torn whole nations apart and led to the slaughters of millions in countries around the world.
You might think we would have learned a lesson from that and stay away from injecting race into political issues. Yet playing the race card has become an increasingly common response to growing public anger at the policies of the Obama administration. Read more…

What's the Next 'Global Warming'? Herewith I propose a contest to invent the next panic.

The Separation of Health and State - What happens when all medical decisions are political:
The U.S. had the highest survival rate for breast cancer at 83.9% and prostate cancer at 91.9%—compared to the U.K.'s respective 69.7% and 51.1%.  While the data are from the 1990s, and British outcomes have since improved somewhat, the authors conclude that "Most of the wide global range in survival is probably attributable to differences in access to diagnostic and treatment services." In other words, advanced tests and drug treatments result in better outcomes.
That kind of innovative health care is costly, and the inescapable logic of a health system dominated by government is that it always ends up with some version of NICE. Scarcity forces choices, which have long been especially severe in Britain where austerity medicine is the norm. Mr. Cameron deserves credit for trying to ameliorate the worst excesses of a system that pits the terminally ill against, say, strep throat.
The open-ended style of American care has the problem of rapidly growing costs, but as the British spectacle shows it is extremely difficult to reverse a command medical economy once it is entrenched, even when the results are morally appalling. The far better option is to extricate politics and give patients more control, which starts by rolling back ObamaCare. Must read more...
