Conservative on Target - 1/3/12

A Lesson on Presidential PowerThe executive has the power to enforce the laws enacted by Congress. This does not mean the power to rewrite them through bureaucratic authority. Our Constitution was written by wiser men than now lead our nation. The framers placed limits upon the immense Presidential power that Lincoln used to wage civil war. Yet, Lincoln managed the war and redirected the domestic political scene. President Obama would benefit from understanding the limits to political power our framers intended. Rather than remake America, he might remake his administration and restore Constitutional democracy. He may be remembered as one who exercised imperial powers counter to the will of the people, as if they were his subjects.

Why Does Anybody Need a 30-Round Magazine? [Boy would I love to have a 15-30 round shotgun!]   Senator Dianne Feinstein's latest divide-and-conquer attack on the Second Amendment has made even Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) a sucker for the argument that private citizens do not need high-capacity magazines. These include not only 30-round rifle magazines, but 17-round magazines for handguns like the Glock.   Why does anybody need a high capacity magazine? If Senator Manchin were to educate himself by, for example, attending Front Sight's four-day defensive handgun class, he would learn the two primary answers:(1) Failure to stop the aggressor, and (2) Multiple aggressors

Boehner's Second Chance: How his speakership can be better than it was the last two years.
Mr. Boehner needs a plausible counter-strategy. Recognize that he can't govern from the House, but use the leverage of the spending sequester and power of the purse to see what few policy victories can be had.
Find some programs and special interests to showcase and defund, in the manner of the Bridge to Nowhere. Take on corporate welfare. And unleash other Members in the House and Senate—the Toomeys, Hensarlings and Johnsons—to make the GOP's growth and reform case to the public. Mr. Boehner can't be the main party spokesman.
Push smaller reforms that are good policy but might also have a chance of picking up Democratic support. Focus on promoting economic growth and raising middle-class incomes. Use the House's oversight power to illuminate big problems like ObamaCare and government failures, not small beer like "Fast and Furious."

The swift passage of the fiscal cliff deal violated House Republicans’ pledge to allow the public three days to review legislation and President Obama's promise to post bills online for five days before signing them. [Surprised?]

"Socialism is the phantastic younger brother of despotism, which it wants to inherit. Socialism wants to have the fullness of state force which before only existed in despotism. ... However, it goes further than anything in the past because it aims at the formal destruction of the individual … who … can be used to improve communities by an expedient organ of government." -- Friedrich Nietzsche
