Delivering the Male: Chen Guangcheng may have escaped China, but he hasn't escaped the anti-girl barbarism. Here in America, some leaders are still defending the sexist violence of his homeland--a violence that Chen spent his life fighting. Imagine his surprise this week when even the President of the United States wouldn't take a stand against the intentional targeting of baby girls in the womb. After yesterday's House debate, Chen must have wondered if he was still in communist China, as members like Rep. John Conyers (D-Mich.) tried to legitimize sex-selection abortion as an expression of women's freedom! If America outlaws gendercide, Conyers argued, it would "trample the rights of women."
What rights? A woman's "right" to discriminate? Congressman Jerrold Nadler (D-N.Y.) called it an extension of the "war on women." He's absolutely correct, except that it's the Left's war--on baby girls. Tennessee Republican Marsha Blackburn took offense at his insinuation and fired back. "It's hypocrisy to say [you're] pro-woman and that it's okay to end the life of an unborn child just because of its gender. Since when did America subscribe to the idea that males are worth more than females? It's sick, it's discriminatory, it's sexists, and it's blatantly anti-woman and anti-human."

PLEASE DO THIS NOW! Billy Graham: Will you commit to Pray For Our Nation in 2012?
Google, Microsoft, Verizon and Cisco are warning Congress about an effort led by China, Russia and some Arab states to give the United Nations more control of the Internet -- a move the companies say would empower governments to clamp down on civil rights and free speech.
Big government wants to make you smaller. New York City is set to impose a16-ounce limit on the size of sweetened drinks sold at restaurants, movie theaters, sports venues and street carts in an effort to fight obesity. Mayor Michael Bloomberg says he "thinks it's what the public wants the mayor to do." [Can they get any more ridiculous, nanyish or statist? – JS]
Culture Still Matters: To put these crude stereotypes more abstractly, is civil society mostly moderate, predicated on the rule of law, and meritocratic -- or is it better characterized by self-indulgence, cynicism and tribalism?
The answers to these questions do not hinge on race, money or natural wealth, but they do involve culture and the way average people predictably live minute by minute. Again, these national habits and traditions accrued over centuries, and as much as politics or economics, they explain in part why Bonn is not Athens, and Zurich is not Naples, or for that matter why Cairo is unlike Tel Aviv or why Mexico City differs from Toronto.
There is one final funny thing about contemporary culture. What people say and do about it are two different things. We in the postmodern, politically correct West publicly pontificate that all cultures are just different and to assume otherwise is pop generalization, but privately assume that you would prefer your bank account to be in Frankfurt rather than Athens, or the tumor in your brain to be removed in London rather than Lisbon.
You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream." C. S. Lewis
